Benefit sanctions for failing to do an email/electronic or telephone based interview

From 02 April 2013, a number of changes are being made to decision making on benefit sanctions, it will then be possible to get a sanction for failing to attend not only a face-to-face interview, but an email/electronic or telephone based interview.

“1. actual attendance
2. telephone
3. electronic means (e.g. e-mail).
It is the advisor who will specify the manner of participation.”

This follows on from the 22nd of October 2012 power to make any activity mandatory via a Jobseeker’s Directions, which can be given:

1.     verbally
2.     in writing
3.     by email
4.     by telephone or
5.     by other electronic means (eg. text message).
